Pride Month Is Here! A little History and what to wear

By Dr. Mindy
This is the most colorful, celebrated, and fun month of the year. Pride Month is dedicated to uplifting and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Now, more than ever, Pride Month must be recognized and empowered.
This celebrated month isn't solely about the parades, drag performances, protests, or parties—it's a time to truly educate yourself on LGBTQ+ rights and become a genuine activist. I live in Miami, and trust me, this city knows how to host a Pride Month. Come on down!
Origin of Pride Month
Let's start from the beginning. It was 55 years ago, on June 28th, 1969, that the Stonewall riots took place—a groundbreaking turning point in the recognition of Gay rights. The year after the riots, the first Pride marches were held in several cities around the Country, including the one on Christopher Street in Manhattan that goes right past the Stonewall Inn itself.
These parades created a movement, a groundswell that allows us to celebrate and recognize the ever-evolving LGBTQIA2-S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and Two-Spirit) community.
More than ever, Pride celebrations are experiencing a dramatic increase in attendance, with many attendees being Millennials, Generation Z'ers, and those passionate about supporting the community's rights.
The History Behind the Rainbow Flag
Oh, the iconic rainbow flag! When you see it, you automatically know what it represents—but do you know why it was chosen as the LGBTQ+ Pride symbol?
The rainbow flag was created in 1978 by San Francisco activist Gilbert Baker.
According to Baker, the "rainbow of humanity" was intended to symbolize all races and all genders. Each of the six colors of the rainbow flag represents a different aspect of the LGBTQ+ movement: life, healing, sunlight, nature, serenity, and spirit.
